Summer School Ceramics: Wheel Throwing Week – Beginners

About this course

The course introduces wheel throwing through practical sessions focused on centring clay, forming basic cylinders and developing simple shapes. Learners practise manipulating clay and making pieces with consistent shape and size, while exploring the capabilities of the material. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions, and guidance provided both individually and to the group. The course also covers basic ceramic terminology, workshop health and safety, and the use of pottery tools.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners with little or no experience of throwing clay on a wheel. It combines individual practice with group guidance, and regular attendance and punctuality are expected to participate fully in the sessions.

Before you go

• Wear clothes that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes.
• Bring a pen and notebook.
• Pottery tools are available to use; participants may bring their own tools or purchase a beginners’ pack if they wish.
• Up to five selected pieces can be bisque fired for collection and glazing at a later date.
• The ceramics studio has lift access.
