About this course

Participants explore how found and recycled objects can be adapted as printmaking tools, using relief and intaglio processes to investigate different visual effects. The course combines tutor demonstrations, presentations and group discussions with individual technical and critical guidance. Learners develop personal printmaking projects while receiving regular feedback on their decisions and working methods. Safe use of the printmaking equipment and workshop is also covered.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners, and no previous printmaking experience is necessary. Learners with some experience may also use it to renew their knowledge of particular techniques. Teaching combines group activities with individual guidance, and an interest in drawing or design may be helpful.

Before you go

• Learners should bring their own tools and drawing equipment, such as paintbrushes and a sketchbook or notebook.
• Protective clothing and rubber gloves are advised.
• Most studio consumables, including ink, cleaning materials and solvents, are included, but paper and etching plates or lino blocks must be purchased separately.
• Health and safety procedures are explained during the course, and learners must sign an agreement to follow them.
• Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or cause irritation. Learners should inform the tutor about pregnancy or sensitivities so precautions can be advised.
• The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
