About this course
The class introduces Chen-style Taijiquan through warm-up and stretching, standing qigong (zhanzhuang), silk reeling (chansigong), breathing and form practice. Learners work through the Chen 19 Form or sections of Chen Lao Jia, while advanced students may also study Xinjia. Teaching combines tutor demonstration and guided practice, with opportunities for questions, exploration and feedback in small practice groups. Notes, videos and homework are available through the college’s virtual learning environment, alongside regular home practice.
What you'll learn
- Practise warm-up and stretching exercises
- Hold standing qigong (zhanzhuang) for at least 10 minutes
- Perform part of the Chen 19 Form or Chen Lao Jia
- Practise silk reeling (chansigong) and associated Taijiquan movements
- Use breathing, zhanzhuang and Taijiquan exercises to calm and focus the mind
Is this course right for you?
The class is open to all levels, ages and abilities, with movement or exercise experience described as helpful rather than required. Participation includes guided practice in small groups and regular practice at home. Learners are asked to work within their own limits and inform the tutor about relevant fitness, mobility, stamina or health issues.

- Wear loose clothing and flat, comfortable indoor shoes; only indoor shoes are permitted in the studio.
