About this course

The course develops tap technique through warm-ups, centre-based step routines, travelling exercises and short combinations. Sessions explore pick-up steps, body alignment, different tempi, patterns, directions and arm lines, including exercises from the IDTA Grade 2 and 3 tap syllabus. Teaching includes tutor feedback, peer exchange of ideas and self-assessment. Learners also work towards presenting a short tap routine in a Morley Dance performance, with personal targets discussed in relation to the course outcomes.

What you'll learn

  • Demonstrate exercises for a range of pick-up steps
  • Combine tap steps with appropriate body alignment, tempi, patterns, directions and arm lines
  • Perform selected Grade 2 and 3 exercises from the IDTA tap syllabus
  • Present a short tap routine for a Morley Dance performance

Is this course right for you?

This higher-level course is intended for learners with a good practical knowledge of tap and at least one year’s experience. Tap involves energetic movement, including hops, springs, jumps and turns, so a good level of fitness and stamina is expected. Adjustments may be made for knee or mobility problems.

  • Previous tap experience or relevant dance training is required
  • Sessions involve energetic physical activity and travelling steps
  • Some course activities may be completed outside class time
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are expected

Before you go

  • Tap shoes are preferred; hard-soled, low-heeled comfortable shoes can be used instead.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid heavy jewellery.
  • Bring a folder for handouts.
  • Learners with knee or mobility problems may have steps adjusted to suit their needs.
