Textiles: creative machine embroidery

About this course

Participants investigate creative uses of the sewing machine, combining free embroidery with traditional machine stitching to produce a collection of samples and design ideas. Work is developed from a visual theme using fabric, paper and other media, with techniques including appliqué, water-soluble fabric, varied thread weights and couching. Teaching combines group demonstrations, individual guidance, sample analysis, contemporary embroidery references and informal discussion. Learners develop designs in a sketchbook or on design sheets, with feedback provided during the course.
