Textiles: experimental print

About this course

Participants investigate experimental screen printing on fabric through open screens, stencils, hand-painted dyes and one-off processes that produce varied marks, colour and texture. The course also introduces heat-press techniques using transfer paper, transfer dyes, foil and flock, alongside methods for creating patterns, repetitions and unique designs. Teaching combines demonstrations, visual presentations, samples, handouts, group discussion, individual tuition and hands-on practice. Activities cover cloth preparation, print fixation and the development of fabric samples, small artworks or textiles for interior and fashion items. More experienced learners can refine personal ideas and projects.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for learners at all levels, including those with no prior knowledge, as well as more advanced participants extending their textile skills. It involves demonstrations, individual and group tuition, discussion and practical investigation. Learners should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions and take part in group discussion.

Before you go

• Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course.
• Participants need to bring fabrics suited to their personal preferences; this will be discussed in class.
• Bring a sketchbook.
• Bring an overall and rubber gloves, and wear old clothes with closed-toe shoes.
• Optional straightforward exercises may be set for work outside class.
