About this course

The course introduces frame loom weaving through live demonstrations, individual tuition, feedback and question-and-answer sessions. Participants practise setting up and dressing the loom, then explore plain weave, texture, colour blending, simple shapes, 3D effects, Soumak, inlay and hemstitching. They create a varied collection of samples using traditional and non-traditional weave structures, finishing techniques and design ideas drawn from visual inspiration. The later sessions focus on developing and completing one small hand-woven artwork, which could be framed or hung on a wall.

What you'll learn

  • Set up and dress a frame loom independently.
  • Create hand-woven samples using varied weave structures and tactile effects.
  • Apply techniques including Rya knots, colour blending, Soumak, inlay and hemstitching.
  • Use visual references to develop ideas for woven work.
  • Finish woven edges using a range of techniques.
  • Develop a small hand-woven artwork from sample work.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners and for learners revisiting introductory frame loom skills. Participants should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, contribute to group discussions and present their own ideas and work. Personal project work outside class is expected as the course develops.

  • Includes opportunities to discuss and present individual ideas and work.
  • Requires independent work on personal projects between sessions.
  • An intermediate weaving course is suggested as a possible next step.

Before you go

  • Before the course, prepare five inspiring images, such as photographs, postcards or images from books, magazines or the internet.
  • A sketchbook would be useful for storing samples and sketching designs.
  • Course handouts, tasks, resources and demonstration videos are stored in Google Classroom; learners will need to log in before sessions begin.
