Textiles: monoprinting and hand stitch

About this course

Participants develop personal imagery into textile print designs using fabric paints and a range of additive and subtractive monoprinting methods, including painting, drawing, wiping and masks. They explore colour, mark-making, pattern and texture on plain and patterned fabrics, then cut, appliqué, bond and manipulate prints to create layered or dimensional work. Teaching combines demonstrations, practical exercises, discussions, illustrations and handouts, with tutorials delivered individually, in small groups and to the whole class. Hand stitching is explored both decoratively and as a means of constructing dimensional samples.

Before you go

• Basic materials are provided.
• Learners need to bring imagery to inspire their prints, such as photographs, drawings or small objects.
• Patterned fabrics may be brought for use on the course; the tutor will advise further.
