About this course

Participants investigate how dye plants produce colour and how modifiers can create different tones, with attention to plants that can be cultivated or gathered locally. The course combines natural dyeing with printmaking experiments, including nature printing and screen printing using stencils. Work is developed on both paper and fabric through mark making and design development. Participants create a selection of naturally dyed and printed samples before choosing a direction for a final piece.

What you'll learn

  • Identify plants suitable for natural dyeing and use colour modifiers to produce varied tones
  • Apply plant-based colour to paper and fabric
  • Experiment with nature printing and screen printing using stencils
  • Develop marks and designs into a final naturally dyed and printed piece

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners as well as learners with some experience of natural dyeing. It may suit those who want to explore how natural dye techniques can be translated into textile and paper printmaking, with projects developed individually across the course.

Before you go

  • Participants take home a selection of dyed and printed samples and a final outcome piece.
