About this course

Participants develop drawing through observation of subjects including the life model, objects and landscapes, alongside work from photographs and a museum or gallery visit. Exercises address composition, structure, proportion, perspective and expression, with opportunities to work across different drawing materials and techniques. Teaching combines tutor-led group tuition, one-to-one tutorials, group discussion and detailed feedback. The course also supports exploration of a personal drawing style through varied subjects and approaches.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with some drawing experience and is labelled Improver, suggesting a stage beyond fundamental beginner study. There are no formal entry requirements, but previous participation in a beginners’ drawing class or equivalent experience is recommended. Classes involve group tuition, discussion, feedback and individual tutorials.

Before you go

  • Participants must bring their own materials, including cartridge paper or a sketchbook, soft pencils, an eraser, a sharpener, willow charcoal, soft pastel and ink. Ink may be supplied as a pen, such as a Tombow brush pen, or as bottled Indian ink.
