About this course
The course traces the Dreyfus Affair from the first trial in 1894 through the campaign for truth, the second trial, conviction, pardon and amnesty. It considers the political and international setting, the growth of nationalism and anti-Semitism, and the roles of the Army, press and emerging intellectuals. Teaching combines lectures supported by PowerPoint presentations with discussion in large groups. Sessions also examine how the Affair affected the French Republic and why it has retained a longer-term historical legacy.
