About this course
The course places the French New Wave in its political, social, cultural and cinematic context, tracing how the movement emerged in France towards the end of the 1950s. It considers filmmakers associated with la nouvelle vague alongside landmark films and the movement’s influence beyond France. Teaching takes the form of an informal lecture and talk, with opportunities for questions and discussion. Film extracts are screened during the class to support consideration of the period’s cinematic importance and continuing legacy.
