About this course
Participants play selected Coltrane compositions and receive coaching on sight-reading, rhythm and approaches to improvisation. Rehearsals also examine the music’s wider jazz context, Coltrane’s influences and key innovations. The course includes transcription and analysis of solos from the repertoire, with discussion of how particular approaches can inform participants’ own playing. Ensemble work is combined with tutor guidance and preparation of repertoire between classes.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for advanced jazz players working in an ensemble setting. The provider recommends playing at around ABRSM Grade V/VI level or above, with comparable sight-reading ability. Previous experience transcribing jazz solos may be useful but is not stated as essential. Learners are expected to practise the repertoire between classes.
