About this course

Participants play selected Coltrane compositions and receive coaching on sight-reading, rhythm and approaches to improvisation. Rehearsals also examine the music’s wider jazz context, Coltrane’s influences and key innovations. The course includes transcription and analysis of solos from the repertoire, with discussion of how particular approaches can inform participants’ own playing. Ensemble work is combined with tutor guidance and preparation of repertoire between classes.

  • Apply sight-reading and rhythmic approaches within ensemble playing
  • Transcribe and analyse solos from the repertoire
