The Italian Renaissance: from Giotto to Botticelli


An all-levels course examining Italian Renaissance art, visual culture and historical context through lectures, presentations, activities and discussion.
About this course
The course examines Italian Renaissance art and visual culture from approximately 1300 to 1480, using works by Giotto, Masaccio, Botticelli and other artists alongside less familiar objects. Its themes include artistic workshops and guilds, linear perspective, classical antiquity, religious and mythological imagery, portraiture, identity, women’s representation and architectural change. Teaching combines lectures, slide presentations, activities and group discussion. Participants will analyse artworks through their material construction, iconography and relationship to the social, religious and political contexts of Renaissance Italy.
