About this course

This introductory history course examines Ignatius Sancho’s life from enslavement and domestic service in England to his work as a grocer, composer, writer and voter. It considers his marriage and family life, correspondence, published letters and place in British society. Teaching is lecture-based, with further reading provided. Discussion covers the significance of Sancho’s political participation, his musical and literary work, and the contribution of his published writings to awareness of the experiences of enslaved and freed Africans and the abolition movement.
