About this course

The course traces Norman history from the development of Normandy before 1066 through the Conquest of England and the civil war between Stephen and Matilda, concluding with Norman activity in southern Italy and Sicily. It considers political, economic, social and religious change, including the significance of Domesday Book and the Pipe Roll of 1130. Teaching combines weekly PowerPoint presentations with seminar-style discussion of translated primary sources. Learners are encouraged to contribute relevant current reading or broadcasts and undertake further reading to inform class debate.
