The philosophy of race

About this course

The course examines philosophical debates about what race is, including arguments that question its existence or coherence and accounts of race as a social construct. It considers how racial categories have developed across historical and cultural contexts, drawing on thinkers including W.E.B. Du Bois, Frantz Fanon, Charles Mills and Kwame Anthony Appiah. Sessions introduce topics through assigned readings and PowerPoint presentations, followed by critical discussion. The course also considers systemic racism, racial privilege and the intersections of race with class, gender and nationality, applying philosophical ideas to contemporary social and political issues.
