About this course
The course develops advanced piano playing through regular performances, detailed tutor feedback, listening to classmates and discussion of repertoire. Weekly technical sessions examine specific studies in depth, while tutor-selected pieces broaden the class’s repertoire. Students also take part in a duet-based sight-reading exercise several times during the year and are encouraged to practise and perform, preferably from memory. The course includes informal and end-of-year concerts, with opportunities to communicate musical ideas to an audience. Attendance is available onsite or through live streaming, and discussions take place in English.
What you'll learn
- Apply improved piano technique to more technically demanding repertoire
- Extend knowledge of piano repertoire
- Produce a more refined quality of tone
- Use pedalling with greater subtlety
- Perform with sensitivity and musical expression
- Communicate musical interpretation to an audience
Is this course right for you?
This Advanced course is intended for pianists performing at approximately Grade 8 standard or above, rather than those starting from fundamental techniques. Entry is subject to audition, and participants should be prepared for regular performance, group discussion, substantial practice outside class and research into the pieces they study. Learners need to follow and contribute to discussions in English.
- Applicants should prepare two contrasting pieces for audition.
- Students perform several times during the course and comment on other performers’ work.
- The course can be attended onsite or online, including by international students living outside the UK.
Before you go
- Bring relevant music scores, a notebook and pencil.
- Keep a journal for tutor feedback and reflections on classwork and individual practice.
- Online participants need a good internet connection and a computer or tablet with webcam and sound.
- Students are expected to practise outside class and research the background of the pieces they are learning.
