The Rise and Fall of the Mughal Empire

About this course

The course traces the Mughal Empire from its expansion in northern India to the transfer of power to the British Crown in 1858. Topics include military innovation, administration, trade in textiles and other commodities, court life, literature, language, architecture, science and observatories. It also considers changing approaches to religious tolerance and persecution, the rise of rival powers such as the Marathas, and the East India Company’s expanding influence. Teaching uses PowerPoint presentations alongside class discussion, with learners encouraged to contribute their views and ideas.
