About this course

The course examines Europe’s transformation between 1000 and 1300, including church reform, German and French kingship, the Reconquista, relations between Islam, Byzantium and the West, urban growth and the twelfth-century renaissance. Teaching combines weekly illustrated talks with class discussion and small-group analysis of original sources, supported by handouts. Occasional short homework readings may extend the topics covered in class. The course focuses on continental Europe, with minimal reference to the history of the United Kingdom.
