About this course
The course examines “The Will to Know”, “Society Must Be Defended” and “The Birth of Biopolitics”, tracing Foucault’s analyses of genealogy, power-knowledge relations, governmentality and biopower. Discussion will consider how these ideas relate to social structures, neoliberal governance, norms, freedoms and resistance. Teaching follows a seminar format, with opportunities to discuss and debate interpretations. Short extracts are read during class and at home, providing material for examining the assumptions and consequences of theories and policies.
