The course examines how Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio shaped Italian language and literature during the 14th century. It considers their historical and cultural context, sources of inspiration, literary innovations and influence on later writing in Italy and elsewhere. Participants read extracts from their major works and discuss their significance and literary qualities. Teaching combines short lectures with whole-group discussion, group activities and pair work.
