The course places the Winter of Discontent of 1978-79 within the wider development of Britain’s economy, employment patterns, trade union movement and government policy after 1945. It considers the Social Contract, the Ford and haulage strikes, public-sector action, the role of women union activists, contemporary reporting and the significance of the weather. Teaching combines tutor input, examination of contemporary sources and class discussion, leading to critical consideration of the strikes’ consequences, the fall of the Callaghan Government and the event’s enduring legacy.
