'Through Venetian eyes': Canaletto in London England

About this course
The course examines Canaletto’s years in England, including his London views and paintings of country houses such as Warwick, Badminton and Alnwick. It places this work within the eighteenth-century English art market, considering patronage, advertising and the position of a foreign artist in Britain. Teaching combines illustrated lectures with group discussion. Topics include Canaletto’s working methods, the relationship between drawings and finished paintings, and the influence of his views on artists including Paul Sandby and J. M. W. Turner.
