Throwing, Hand-building and Decorating Ceramics – Intermediate

About this course

Participants develop ceramic pieces from their own ideas using coiling, slab building, wheel throwing, sculpting, modelling and combinations of these methods. Sessions also cover slip decoration, underglazes, oxides and glazing, with attention to finishing work and creating surfaces suited to the final pieces. The course is studio-based and includes access to ceramics resources, with technical support available during the making process. Learners may also keep a working journal containing sketches, inspiration and technical notes, although this is not compulsory.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for intermediate-level learners who want to continue developing ceramic making and design skills through studio work. It takes place in a collaborative setting while allowing participants to develop pieces of their own design. Learners must be aged 19 or over at the start of the course.

Before you go

• Participants need to bring an apron, dust mask and notebook.
• Clay is subject to a separate charge.
• A range of underglazes, oxides and glazes is available for use.
• Some tools can be purchased at the college.
