About this course

The workshop develops wheel-throwing for tableware through demonstrations followed by individual guidance. Participants practise centring, pulling even walls and forming cylinders, bowls, plates and mugs, including attaching handles. They also learn to turn leather-hard work to create feet on bowls and refine the bases of mugs and cylinders. Learners with previous throwing experience receive guidance tailored to their aims, including troubleshooting technique, working with larger amounts of clay and refining forms.

What you'll learn

  • Centre clay and pull vessel walls effectively on the wheel
  • Throw cylinders, bowls, plates and mugs
  • Attach handles to thrown mugs
  • Turn bowls to create feet and refine the bases of vessels
  • Identify and correct throwing issues
  • Refine forms and work with larger weights of clay

Is this course right for you?

The course is labelled All Levels and combines initial demonstrations with individual guidance. Learners who have thrown before can receive advice based on their existing technique and tableware goals, including help with larger forms and correcting technical issues. Each participant works at an individual pottery wheel within a small group.

  • Previous throwing experience is accommodated through tailored guidance
  • The class is limited to 10 participants
  • Each learner has a dedicated pottery wheel

Before you go

  • Up to 10 pieces can be kept as part of the course.
  • Additional pieces may be kept for an extra charge per item.
  • Technicians can fire and glaze the work in the standard white studio glaze.
  • An optional later glaze class is available for learners who wish to glaze their own work after the bisque firing.
