About this course
The workshop introduces lino cutting, reduction printing and caustic etching, with the specific emphasis changing each term. Participants develop set projects alongside individual work, using demonstrations, presentations, technical guidance and critical feedback to explore printmaking ideas and methods. The course also covers printing onto paper with a registration template and safe use of studio equipment. Teaching combines group discussions, critiques and presentations with one-to-one advice. Participants are encouraged to record their development in a sketchbook and to examine their own work, artists’ work and other learners’ techniques during the course.
What you'll learn
- Use lino-cutting tools to create varied surface effects.
- Experiment with caustic etching using masking techniques.
- Print onto paper using a registration template.
- Apply safe working procedures when using printmaking equipment and chemicals.
- Develop visual ideas and make informed technical and critical decisions.
Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for beginners as well as learners with some printmaking experience who want to renew their knowledge of particular techniques. No previous printmaking experience is necessary, although an interest in or experience of drawing or design may be helpful. Participation includes individual project work alongside group discussion and critiques.
- Suitable for learners starting printmaking without previous experience.

- The class accommodates learners working at different levels alongside one another.
Before you go
- Bring personal tools and drawing equipment, such as paintbrushes, together with a sketchbook or notebook.
- Protective clothing and rubber gloves are advisable.
- Most studio consumables, including ink, cleaning materials and solvents, are included. Paper, etching plates and lino blocks are obtained separately through the department.
- Health and safety procedures are explained at the start of the course and must be followed. Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or cause irritation, so relevant sensitivities should be raised with the tutor.
