Traditional and Experimental Tapestry Weaving

About this course

Participants explore how design, colour, texture and surface pattern can be developed through traditional and experimental tapestry techniques. Beginners learn to warp a frame and weave a small sampler, while more experienced learners can work on larger or self-directed pieces using varied materials and methods. Teaching takes place in a shared studio, with activities involving weaving on and off the frame. The course accommodates different levels, allowing learners to develop techniques appropriate to their experience and interests.

What you'll learn

• Warp a weaving frame and begin and finish a small tapestry sampler.
• Create simple shapes using introductory tapestry techniques.
• Experiment with texture and 2D and 3D methods on and off the frame.
• Develop a tapestry project using more varied techniques, materials or scale where appropriate.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners and more experienced tapestry learners working together in the same studio. No previous tapestry experience is necessary, although an interest in drawing or design may be helpful. Beginners work through foundational processes, while returning or experienced learners can pursue more developed techniques and projects.

Before you go

• Most warp and weft consumables are included.
• A sketchbook or notebook and an A4 file for information sheets are useful to bring.
• Bobbins and additional yarns may be bought and brought optionally; further requirements will be discussed in class.
• The studio has partial disabled access via a stair lift. Learners with mobility support needs should contact the relevant college support or administration team before enrolling.
