Traditional Upholstery

About this course

The course introduces traditional methods for stripping and reupholstering small furniture such as chairs, footstools and stools. Participants work through the construction of an upholstered piece, including frame preparation, webbing, tacking, stuffing, stitched and rolled edges, and final covering and trimming techniques. Teaching combines demonstrations, practical exercises, handouts and discussion. Learners apply the techniques to a personal project while recording practical skills, material samples and research in a workbook. The course also considers the sustainability of extending the life of existing furniture frames.

Before you go

• Participants must bring a suitable small chair or stool and their own top fabric.
• The college provides upholstery tools and equipment.
• Specialist materials used in the studio incur an additional charge.
• Sturdy shoes should be worn; open toes and flimsy soles are not advisable.
• A camera, notebook, A4 folder and pen are recommended for keeping a practical workbook.
• Projects can normally be brought to class. Delivery by appointment is available in special circumstances, and storage capacity is limited.
