About this course

Participants explore etching and photopolymer processes by making intaglio and relief plates, developing images across multiple plates and combining them to produce one-colour and complex multi-colour prints. Techniques include layering, altering plates and adding further etching plates to an image. Teaching combines demonstrations, group and individual tutorials, peer review, group work and critique. A suggested starting project and optional theme provide structure, while sketchbook research and personal studio time support the development of an individual printmaking project.

Is this course right for you?

The course is labelled Intermediate and Advanced, but no previous printmaking experience is necessary. It is intended for learners who want to explore printmaking through personal projects and are prepared to take part in group work, critiques, discussion and research. An interest in, or experience of, drawing or design may be useful.

• Learners should be willing to participate in group critique, peer review and shared projects
• Some processes and presses require physical strength, with tutor assistance available when needed
• The course can accommodate learners with some prior experience who want to develop a chosen printmaking technique

Before you go

• Participants need to bring pencils, paintbrushes, a craft knife or scalpel, a sketchbook or notebook and a portfolio for taking work home.
• Most basic studio consumables, including inks and solvents, are included. Participants must pay separately for paper, card and acrylic plate, which are available through the department.
• Health and safety procedures are explained during the course, and participants must agree to follow them.
• Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy. Pregnant participants should inform the tutor for advice about precautions.
• The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is located on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
