About this course

The course explores intaglio printmaking through making plates and prints, with learners selecting processes that suit their ideas. Demonstrations, exercises, presentations and group discussions are combined with individual technical and critical advice. Beginners can work towards a small set of prints, while those with more experience can continue developing a personal project. The latter part of the course focuses on personal print projects, with an optional book project also available.

What you'll learn

  • Produce a small set of intaglio prints using a range of techniques
  • Develop a personal print project and select processes appropriate to individual ideas
  • Create prints using more than one colour and, where appropriate, more than one plate or technique
  • Apply technical knowledge when using printmaking equipment and workshop facilities safely
  • Develop visual language and make critical decisions through printmaking

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners, returning students and learners developing beyond fundamental printmaking techniques. No previous printmaking experience is required, although an interest in or experience of drawing or design is useful. Teaching combines group participation with individual guidance, and some presses and processes require physical strength.

  • Beginners and returning students are explicitly accommodated
  • Learners who attended either of the two previous terms can continue an existing project
  • Some printmaking processes and presses require physical strength

Before you go

  • Learners need to bring pencils, a sketchbook or notebook, and a portfolio for taking work home.
  • Most basic studio consumables, including inks and solvents, are included. Paper, etching plates and acrylic sheets are not included and can be bought through the department.
  • Health and safety procedures are explained during the course, and learners must agree to follow them. Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy, so pregnant learners should inform the tutor.
  • There is no wheelchair access to the print studio, which is on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
  • The tutor can assist with presses and processes where physical strength is needed.
