Tuesday Morning Printmaking: Intermediate and advanced

About this course

The course explores etching through experimentation with deeply bitten lines, varying biting times, hard- and soft-ground techniques, and layered aquatint for tone and texture. Participants develop projects through demonstrations, group critiques, peer review, group tutorials and one-to-one guidance, with time to investigate their own work. Sketchbooks are encouraged as a way to develop ideas and record technical information. The class also considers artists’ work as a reference for personal printmaking practice, alongside technical knowledge and safe working procedures in the print workshop.

The class is open to beginners and more experienced printmakers, who work alongside one another and exchange ideas. Its mix of group critique, peer review, group tutorials, one-to-one guidance and personal exploration suits learners who are prepared to participate in shared discussions as well as develop individual work. An interest in drawing and experimentation is useful.

Before you go

• Bring pencils, pens and a sketchbook to the first class.
• Protective clothing is provided; learners may bring their own apron and rubber gloves.
• Most studio consumables, including ink, cleaning materials and solvents, are included.
• Paper and lino blocks are not included and can be bought through the department.
• Health and safety procedures are explained at the start of the course and when necessary. Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or cause irritation, so learners should discuss relevant circumstances or sensitivities with the tutor.
• The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
