Typography, typefaces and fonts

About this course

The course examines major movements in typography alongside principles for using type effectively. Learners consider how typeface choices influence the tone and meaning of written communication, and study conventions for presenting type accurately. Teaching combines presentations, demonstrations, practical tasks, individual and group tutoring, and discussion. Adobe InDesign is used to scale and position type in layouts, while Adobe Illustrator and type creation applications support the development of original typefaces. Examples from historical and contemporary creative practice inform the work, with opportunities to review and reflect on both individual and group outcomes. Extension activities may be set for work outside the class.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for intermediate learners with a background in visual communication, although previous typography knowledge is not required. Participation includes practical work, individual and group tutoring, group discussion and reflection on work. English-language competency is required to follow instructions and demonstrations, read hand-outs and take part in discussions.

• Prior knowledge of visual communication is expected, but typography-specific experience is not.
• Learners should be prepared to contribute to group discussions and review work.

Before you go

• Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course.
• Learners are advised to bring an A5 or A4 sketchbook for recording ideas.
• An A3 folder is advised for transporting work.
• Any additional materials required will be discussed during the course.
