Typology - photographing a theme or series

About this course

Participants develop a photographic series by grouping images around shared characteristics, such as abstraction, found objects or environmental similarities. Guided photo walks provide material for an individual project, while classroom teaching covers visual patterns, themes, storytelling, composition and selection. The course introduces Adobe Photoshop and Bridge for refining, editing and organising images. Participants work towards a cohesive typology series, presented as a digital or printed collection, with access to briefs, hand-outs and peer collaboration through Google Classroom.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for photographers who already have a basic technical understanding of digital camera settings and can adjust them manually. Participants develop an individual project through guided outdoor photography and classroom work. Previous Photoshop or Bridge experience is not required.

• A camera with manual controls is essential
• Outdoor work involves walking or travelling approximately 2km
• The course includes individual project development and peer collaboration through Google Classroom
• No prior experience with Adobe Photoshop or Bridge is required

Before you go

• Warm and waterproof clothing is required for outdoor work.
• A camera with manual controls is essential. City Lit has digital SLR and mirrorless cameras, tripods, lenses and flash available for use during class hours.
• A memory stick or portable hard drive would be useful for storing work.
• The studio is fully wheelchair accessible, but part of the course takes place offsite and involves approximately 2km of walking or travel.
