About this course

The course introduces traditional upholstery through a small project, such as a drop-in seat or footstool. Learners work through structured exercises while observing tutor demonstrations, using handouts and discussing their work with the group. Topics include workshop practice, traditional upholstery materials and hand tools, dismantling a small project, and techniques such as webbing, tacking, stuffing, and creating rolled and stitched edges. Learners are also guided to maintain a workbook containing practical notes, material samples and research.

Before you go

  • Bring a small drop-in seat or footstool and your own top fabric.
  • Bring an old shirt or lab coat, a small personal hand towel, and a camera, notebook, A4 folder and writing implement for the workbook.
  • Sturdy shoes should be worn; open toes and flimsy soles are not advisable.
  • A face protector is strongly advised.
  • The studio has lift access to the first floor and stair-lift access to the second floor; learners with mobility issues are advised to contact the department.
