About this course
The course develops core playing technique for violin or viola, including instrument and bow hold, posture, movement, fingering patterns and natural second-finger use. Participants work on listening to and improving intonation, tone quality, tuning and the sound and structure of major scales beginning on open strings. Teaching combines explanations, demonstrations and playing led by the tutor, with individual attention and frequent work in smaller groups. Music notation is used throughout, including reading and writing notation and playing simple tunes and rhythms.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for improvers who have been learning violin or viola for at least one term and can read simple music notation. Teaching takes place mainly in a group, with individual attention and smaller-group work. Learners are expected to follow written and verbal instructions in English and contribute to class discussions.

- Bring a violin or viola kit, including the instrument, bow, rosin and shoulder rest.
- Bring a pen, pencil, eraser and notepad.
- Some music must be purchased for use throughout level 1 ABC.
- Other materials, including relevant notation, are provided by the tutor via Google Classroom.
