About this course
Participants develop violin technique through scales, technical exercises and solo or ensemble repertoire. The course covers posture, left-hand positions, bow control, articulation, dynamics, intonation, tone and preparation exercises for vibrato. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations and explanations with playing, clapping, singing, discussion, note-taking and regular review of practice tasks. Digital resources, including recordings, videos, mobile applications and Moodle, may be used to support study in and beyond class.
What you'll learn
- Maintain a sound playing posture and recognise ways to manage physical tension and strain.
- Play using the left hand in first, second and third positions.
- Control the bow through legato and staccato strokes, with greater awareness of bow distribution and dynamics.
- Improve intonation and tone production.
- Practise preparatory exercises for vibrato.
- Perform repertoire, scales and technical material appropriate to the learner’s playing standard.
Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for intermediate learners with at least one year of violin experience who are confident reading music. Participation includes individual and group playing, discussion in English and regular practice outside class.
- Regular practice outside class is expected, with a recommended minimum of 20 to 30 minutes at least four times a week.
- Learners need to be able to follow and contribute to discussions in English.
- Progress is reviewed against the course outcomes, with opportunities to set personal targets.
Before you go
- Bring a violin, bow, shoulder rest, rosin, cleaning cloth, tuning device, spare strings, pencil, eraser and notebook.
- A good internet connection and a computer or tablet with webcam and sound are required.
- Learners should maintain regular practice habits to help avoid unnecessary physical strain.
