About this course
The course develops intermediate violin and viola technique through guided whole-class playing, tutor accompaniment and individual playing with feedback. Work focuses on sound production through basic bow strokes, movement between first, second, third and fourth positions, and developing or introducing vibrato. Learners also practise aural skills for tuning and note-finding, ensemble listening, notation and relevant music theory. Sessions include pre-recorded accompaniment and some simple playing by ear, alongside scales and arpeggios based on the Grade 4 syllabus.

Is this course right for you?
This course is intended for intermediate violinists and violists working at approximately Grade 3 to 4 standard. Learners should already read music, tune independently, play fluently in first and third positions, and know major and minor scales within the stated range. Teaching combines group direction with opportunities to play individually, and instructions and discussions are in English.
- Existing instrumental study and established basic technique are expected
- Learners need to follow written and verbal instructions in English
- Individual playing takes place within a directed group setting
Before you go
- Bring a violin or viola with bow, rosin and shoulder rest, as well as a pen, pencil, eraser and notepad.
- Some music must be purchased for use across level 4 courses.
- Additional course materials, including notation in treble or alto clef, are provided through Google Classroom.
- Regular practice is described as essential, ideally for at least 30 minutes four or five times a week.
