About this course

Participants develop watercolour and pen-and-ink techniques for tonal landscapes, with particular attention to twilight and night scenes. The work draws on Samuel Palmer and other artists, using reference photographs and warm autumnal colours as starting points. Teaching combines practical demonstrations, verbal explanations, illustrated handouts, individual tuition and group discussion. Learners produce artwork during the session and take part in a group review with constructive feedback.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners as well as learners who already have some watercolour experience. Participation involves practical art-making, following demonstrations and instructions, individual tuition, and discussion and evaluation of finished work in a group.

Before you go

  • Some basic materials are provided.
  • Participants need to bring 300gsm cold-pressed watercolour paper, preferably A3, watercolour brushes and paints, a dip pen, black or brown Indian ink, and a small piece of white candle wax.
