About this course

Participants investigate how watercolour can depict winter light, snow, trees and atmospheric depth. Demonstrations cover controlled washes, transparent colour layers, salt and wax resists, negative painting and masking, alongside the use of limited palettes and warm-cool contrasts. Teaching combines visual demonstrations, verbal explanations, illustrated handouts, practical painting activities, one-to-one guidance and group discussion. Learners use reference images and artists’ work as starting points, then review their finished snow-themed paintings with the group and receive constructive feedback.

What you'll learn

  • Apply controlled washes and transparent layers to build watercolour paintings
  • Use salt and wax resists to create varied textures
  • Use negative painting and masking to suggest crisp highlights
  • Explore warm and cool colour contrasts in snow and winter landscapes
  • Depict light, shadow, texture and atmospheric depth in snow scenes
