About this course

The course uses the life model to investigate spontaneous observation, brush drawing and the expressive qualities of watercolour. Learners will work through short poses with varied brush marks, silhouettes and ink colour, then develop longer studies using transparent washes, colour mixing and added detail. Demonstrations are given to the group and to individuals, with discussion and feedback forming part of the teaching. Watercolour is also combined with charcoal, pencil and coloured drawing pencils. Examples by artists including Rodin, Egon Schiele, Marlene Dumas and Tracey Emin provide reference points for considering different approaches to painting the figure.

What you'll learn

  • Respond quickly to the life model using watercolour
  • Control brushes to create broad, fluid and fine marks
  • Build transparent washes from light to dark
  • Mix fresh colours and use drawing inks for vibrant colour
  • Combine watercolour with charcoal, pencil or coloured drawing pencils

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with some prior life drawing experience. Its improver level suggests development beyond fundamental techniques, while the teaching encourages an experimental approach. Participation includes working from short and long poses, responding to demonstrations, contributing to group discussion and feedback, and reflecting on personal work.

  • Some prior life drawing experience is expected
  • An open-minded and experimental approach is encouraged
  • Group discussion, feedback and self-reflection are part of the learning process

Before you go

  • Basic materials are included.
  • Learners may bring their own watercolours and brushes if they already use the medium.
