About this course
Participants research and develop personal watercolour projects using observation, collage and found imagery. The course explores preparatory studies, working in series, different scales and surfaces, composition, and the layering of transparent and opaque pigments. Teaching combines studio-based project work with tutor demonstrations, one-to-one guidance and group discussion. Technical methods are revisited and consolidated while learners develop exploratory studies and finished pieces, informed by selected historical and contemporary watercolour practitioners.
What you'll learn
- Develop individual watercolour project ideas from observation and secondary sources
- Apply a range of watercolour techniques using different scales and surfaces
- Create exploratory studies and finished pieces using considered compositional approaches
- Layer colour and texture to describe light and depth
- Identify and respond to methods used by selected historical and contemporary watercolour practitioners
Is this course right for you?
This intermediate course is intended for watercolour learners who have already covered the fundamentals in some depth. Participation involves developing self-directed project work, with exploratory studies, contextual discussion, group exchange and individual tutor guidance.
- Includes both independent studio project work and group discussion
- Some preparatory research can be completed at home or during class
- Learners are guided towards developing their own project subject matter
Before you go
- Basic watercolour materials and resources, including paint, brushes and suitable paper, are provided.
- A sketchbook is recommended for project development and note-taking; the tutor can advise if learners do not already have one.
- Learners may bring additional specialist materials, such as their own brushes or different surfaces.
