Watercolour painting studio: urban landscapes

About this course

The course begins with an introduction to watercolour paint and brushwork before moving to outdoor locations in central London. Participants make short observational studies of architectural details, trees, skies, water and bridges, using colour mixing, layered washes, wet-on-wet and dry-brush techniques. Teaching combines practical demonstrations, handouts, one-to-one tutoring and group discussion. The course also introduces watercolour artists who work en plein air, alongside approaches to light, shadow, depth and atmospheric perspective.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improvers, refreshers and learners with a small amount of previous watercolour experience. Participation includes individual painting, demonstrations, group discussions and outdoor work, with some walking between locations.

Before you go

• Basic watercolour paint, brushes and paper suitable for the medium are provided.
• Participants need to buy a watercolour pad in A2/3 size for outdoor work.
• Additional specialist materials may be brought if desired.
