Watercolour, Pen and Ink: Landscape Inspired by Samuel Palmer

About this course

Learners develop landscape studies influenced by Samuel Palmer and other artists, using reference photographs to explore autumnal, twilight and night scenes. Demonstrations cover transparent watercolour layering, warm colour palettes and the use of pen texture with ink to suggest depth and tone. Teaching combines visual demonstrations, verbal explanation, illustrated handouts, practical exercises, individual tuition and group discussion. Learners’ work is reviewed collectively at the end, with questions and constructive feedback contributing to the assessment of their progress.

The course is intended for beginners as well as learners who already have some watercolour experience. It suits participants willing to work in a classroom through practical exercises, demonstrations, individual tuition and group discussion. Work is reviewed collectively, with one-to-one feedback and constructive comments forming part of the assessment.

Before you go

• Learners must bring 300-gram cold-pressed watercolour paper, preferably A3 size.
• Learners must bring watercolour brushes and paints, a dip pen, black or brown Indian ink, and a small piece of white candle wax.
• The tutor will provide a materials and suppliers list by email.
• Some basic materials are provided.
