About this course
The course introduces different routes into abstraction, including research through collage, music, drawing and chance. Learners develop these starting points through choices about paint handling, colour, marks, textures, media, surfaces and scale, using structured projects to extend their individual approaches. The latter part focuses on personal project work, with discussion and reflection on contemporary abstract painting and peer practice. Learners examine how material decisions, planned and unplanned compositional changes, and research methods affect their paintings, while developing ways to articulate their decisions and connect them with wider contemporary contexts.

This is framed as a follow-on course for learners who have already engaged with painting, particularly through individual research and experimentation. Participants will work on their own project ideas within structured activities, with discussion and reflection forming part of the course.
- Relevant to learners progressing from intermediate painting courses.
- Individual project development is a substantial part of the course.

- Basic materials are included.
- An A4 sketchbook is recommended for gathering imagery and developing project ideas.
- A tutor can advise on optional surfaces and tools for extending investigations.
- Gathering preparatory material outside class is encouraged.
