About this course
The course examines how filmmakers use mise en scène, cinematography, editing and sound to shape a film’s visual and sonic style. It places these techniques within the historical development of film forms, genres and modes, including narrative, documentary and fiction film. Teaching combines film extracts, tutor-led talks, directed reading and small- and large-group discussion. Participants will consider formalist film criticism and apply aesthetic analysis to selected film sequences, with additional reading and viewing required outside class.
