Ways into advanced film studies: film history

About this course

The course examines how cinema history is constructed and revised, introducing different methodological approaches to historical research. It considers films, filmmakers, movements and periods in relation to national, cultural, political, social, industrial and technological contexts. Teaching combines film extracts, tutor-led talks, reading materials, and small- and large-group discussion. Participants will apply selected approaches in their own analyses, questioning established accounts of cinema history and considering film both as an industrial product and as a cultural artefact.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with existing familiarity with film studies and is not aimed at complete beginners. Participation includes screenings, tutor-led study and group discussion, with directed reading and viewing outside class. It may also suit those considering further study, including at university level.
