About this course

The course introduces creative writing through poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, playwriting and screenwriting. Participants use prompts, exercises and games to generate their own work, while exploring figurative language, sensory imagery and elements of craft such as character, dialogue and point of view. Teaching combines interactive tutor presentations with discussion and analysis of published writing. Learners receive constructive feedback from the tutor and group, and are invited to share ideas and writing in class.

What you'll learn

  • Produce original pieces of creative writing in a range of forms
  • Apply metaphor, simile and other figurative writing techniques
  • Use the six types of sensory imagery in creative work
  • Recognise and apply elements of craft including point of view, dialogue, imagery and character
  • Set a personal writing goal and identify strengths and challenges in their writing
  • Analyse and discuss creative writing with sensitivity

Is this course right for you?

This introductory course is intended for learners with no previous writing experience who can read and write fluently in English. Participation includes discussing published writing, receiving feedback and sharing ideas or written work with the group. An interest in reading creative writing is expected.
