Ways into playwriting

About this course

The course examines core playwriting techniques, including dialogue, subtext, character development and structuring stories for performance. Participants will read and respond to published plays and extracts, then develop their own dramatic writing through in-class exercises and assignments. Teaching combines practical writing tasks with critical discussion. Learners will assess writing, give and use constructive criticism, and consider how raw ideas can be shaped into a structured piece for the stage.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for beginners in playwriting and introduces the subject without requiring previous playwriting experience. Some creative writing experience would be helpful. Fluent spoken and written English, an interest in theatre and new writing, and willingness to write and read outside class are expected.
