The course examines elements such as rhythm, tone, structure, lineation, rhyme, imagery, metaphor, simile and ekphrasis, alongside forms including the sonnet and haiku. Teaching combines tutor-led and small-group discussion, analysis of published poets, workshop readings, in-class writing and tutor feedback. Learners also edit their poems and consider how craft choices affect a piece’s meaning and effect. Weekly homework exercises are optional.
